Somebody asks their phone a question. The phone answers with one business, one set of hours, one recommendation. No list of ten results, no page two. Either you are the answer or you are invisible.
That is the whole reason a new acronym exists. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the practice of making your business the answer that assistants and AI search features give.
How answer engines actually decide
Answer engines do not crawl your homepage at question time and read it carefully like a diligent customer. They lean on structured, trusted sources. Your business profiles on Google, Bing, and Apple. Your reviews and what those reviews say. Directories and data aggregators they consider reliable. Schema markup on your site that labels facts as facts.
Then they cross-check. When three sources agree on your hours, your address, your category, that fact gets stated with confidence. When sources disagree, the engine hedges, picks a favorite, or leaves you out of the answer entirely. Consistency is not a nice-to-have. It is the trust signal.
AEO and SEO are cousins, not twins
Everything good you do for SEO helps AEO. Clear content, real authority, clean structure. But AEO adds its own homework:
- Profiles everywhere, not just Google. Siri leans on Apple Maps. Copilot leans on Bing. A perfect Google profile says nothing about the other two.
- Facts formatted as facts. Schema markup, consistent NAP data, unambiguous categories.
- Reviews as source material. Assistants summarize what customers wrote. Those words become your description.
- Questions answered plainly. Content that answers a question in the first two sentences gets quoted. Content that winds up for four paragraphs gets skipped.
Why this belongs in the same budget conversation
Here is the part most people miss. Every question an answer engine handles for you is a search where an ad might have been unnecessary. As your answer visibility rises, some paid queries quietly stop pulling weight. If your spend never rebalances to reflect that, your budget is living in the old world while your customers moved to the new one.
Visibility is one problem now. Rankings, answers, maps, profiles, and spend. Treat it as one problem and the money goes further. That is the SmartOpt thesis in a sentence.
